The quarterbacks

We might not get the chance to see rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota, as a knee injury he suffered last week against Miami could rule him out of this game. If he is unable to go, it will likely be second-year Zach Mettenberger to take over. For now though, we will assume Mariota is good to go.

While the rookie has the potential to become one of the league’s top passers, the Falcons have the clear advantage with Matt Ryan under center. Ryan is currently third in the NFL for passing yards (1,751) and has thrown eight touchdowns with only four picks through six games. Despite that, he will feel his best football is yet to come.

Whether it’s due to a banged up group of receivers, a lack of chemistry with Leonard Hankerson coupled with an aging Roddy White or a combination of all three, Ryan hasn’t performed at his best consistently this season. But when he’s been good, he’s been almost unstoppable.

Mariota has made a solid start to life in the NFL, completing 64 percent of his passes for 1,239 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s had little help from his offensive line, which has resulted in 19 sacks (fourth most in the NFL). Without a run game and top receiver, Mariota has made the best out of a poor situation.
