Atlanta Falcons: Will the growing pains be worth it?
By Curtis Hobbs
The Atlanta Falcons are in a period of transition, but are the growing pains worth it?
It feels as if we’re going down the same path weekly; the trails of disappointments that are blotted with mishaps and “if only”. It is time to face the sobering reality: The Atlanta Falcons have not turned the corner fully, or at least enough to compete in the playoffs.
Every week, the weaknesses of our team are exposed by the careful planning of the opponent’s coaches, and though we are seeing tremendous growth across the board with Atlanta as young guys are continuing to grow into their own, the inexperience is shining through glaringly.
I know that everyone will point to the fact the Matt Ryan’s inconsistencies have led to these losses, but along the same token, Ryan is not the one that has been giving up the touchdowns to Adrian Peterson.
And though we should expect more out of the million dollar arm, he can only work with what is given to him. And if that is a continual, come-from-behind attempt for victory, then surely he won’t succeed every time when he is taking on some of the best in the world at football.

This year, the growing pains of a new era have been hard to endure. At the beginning of the year, we thought that it was going to be something like a quick, outpatient surgery but it has become more like brain surgery as the rebuilding and reshaping efforts are much more intense than what was first imagined.
But each week, we are seeing the effects of this careful, surgical approach to the game is paying off as young and unknown players are realizing they are capable of growing into great players, and a great team.
Like the hands of a clock, we are realizing that that time does not stop, nor will it allow the Falcons to play catch up this season. Like every great franchise, the growing pains must be endured if the team wishes to capture the glory that has eluded them for years.
And yes, there will be many more potholes along the way this year, but when we see these same, young and inexperienced players of this year become the bedrocks of the Falcons next year and years following, let’s remember how we saw them growing before our eyes.
It will be then that we can say that the stretching, twisting and winding that is painful to watch this year will all be worth it.
