The Atlanta Falcons are nine-point underdogs against the Carolina Panthers.

Unsurprisingly, the Atlanta Falcons are heavy underdogs in their visit to Bank of America Stadium to take on the undefeated Carolina Panthers. Per OddShark, the Panthers are nine-point favorites in Sunday’s game.

At one stage, these two teams were 5-0. Since then, they have taken very different paths. The Panthers have kept getting better and remain unbeaten at 12-0. The Falcons, however, hit a wall and have won only once in their past seven games. The teams have gone in opposite directions, but are on a collision course twice in the space of three weeks.

The Panthers have beaten some tough opponents this season, going on the road to CenturyLink Field and defeating the Seattle Seahawks. They were also victorious over Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers at home. The prospect of the Atlanta Falcons, on a five-game losing run, led by a struggling Matt Ryan, doesn’t seem as daunting. But this is the NFL. Anything can happen.

Not many penciled in the Philadelphia Eagles to beat the New England Patriots on the road last week, especially after the Eagles were humiliated in Detroit a week earlier. Who predicted the Cincinnati Bengals’ unbeaten run to end at home to a 4-5 Houston Texans?

To win, the Falcons will need the likes of Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman to step up and play well against the league’s No. 3 defense. This also means Matt Ryan will need to kick out of his slump and protect the football better. It will take a flawless performance to defeat the undefeated, but this is why you play the games. Nothing is a given in the NFL.

The Falcons looked a lock to make the playoffs after winning their first five with what looked like a favorable schedule. But now, they are fighting for their playoff lives in a huge game with the Panthers.
