When it rains, it pours.

For the Atlanta Falcons, losing close games has been a theme of the recent losing streak. But this wasn’t close. Drained of confidence, the Falcons were blown out by the undefeated Carolina Panthers. The loss all but ends the Falcons’ playoff hopes.

The Panthers raced away in the first quarter and the Falcons simply couldn’t recover. By the end of the first quarter, Carolina held a 21-0 lead, and added another seven before halftime.

Jonathan Stewart kicked off the demolition with a 44-yard run on the Panthers’ opening drive, and he punched it into the end zone from the 1-yard line to put the first points on the board.

That’s when it turned really ugly.

Despite starting on their own 7-yard line, the Panthers took just three plays to find the end zone for a second time in as many possessions. Cam Newton picked out Ted Ginn Jr. for a 74-yard touchdown. Another Falcons punt. Another big Ginn touchdown, this time of 46 yards. And that was all she wrote.

Dan Quinn rallied the offense together on the sideline and gave them a pep talk, but the team was simply outclassed. This Carolina Panthers are good, very good, and the struggling Falcons simply had no chance.

What’s next for the Falcons?

Well, they need to regroup and find a way to finish the season strong, even though a playoff berth is extremely unlikely.

This team has a lot to fix, but it’s important at times like this to put everything in perspective. This is a rebuilding team, and they will only grow stronger from this humbling defeat.

Cam Newton could be on his way to the MVP, and the Falcons are on the way to an early offseason.
