3. The development of rookies

The 2016 draft class took a few blows the past few weeks but I wouldn’t fret if I were you as a Falcons fan. The incoming draft class is full of athletic talent that if developed correctly, the group as a whole will elevate the Atlanta Falcons roster.

There was a clear need for athleticism at the linebacker position in 2015. 2015 starting middle linebacker Paul Worrilow had a “productive” season with 95 tackles and two interceptions but numerous times throughout the season, Worrilow looked stiff, lacked fluidity, and was a liability in pass coverage. Enter second round pick Deion Jones, who will be in a position battle with Worrilow for the starting spot. At 226 pounds, Jones, his 4.4 speed, and elite athleticism would be a tremendous boost to a defense in need of getting faster and more physical. His development is critical as is LB DeVondre Campbell out of the University of Minnesota. Campbell is 6’4 and over 230 pounds and will see his time at the weak-side position. His size and athleticism provides a new dynamic that Atlanta hasn’t had in quite some time.

The 1st round selection of strong safety Keanu Neal adds a prospect to the defense that has a Kam Chancellor-type ceiling with better coverage ability. In this defense, for this team, a bully is needed. His name is Keanu.

Throw in a 6’4 254 pound pass catcher at tight end in Austin Hooper and now the offense has receiving threat with size and the versatility to play inline or slot. These rookies along with WR Devin Fuller and Wes Schweitzer are vital and their development through this experienced coaching staff can do wonders for the slowly improving roster.
