Every year, the Atlanta Falcons enter OTAs and training camps with momentum. Whether it’s a new phenom they’ve drafted or a new coaching staff, hype precedes the Falcons each year.

As before, the same song continues as the “Dirty Birds” approach the summer with more questions than answers, again, on defense. Without these remedies, former All-Pro defensive end, Dwight Freeney, was looking for an opportunity with Atlanta and now he is flying away from Hartsfield-Jackson without a contract from Atlanta who has chosen to pass on Freeney for the second time in two years, and one has to wonder if this is a mistake?

Freeney will never be the same as he was during his days in Indianapolis, but, just last year, he helped spearhead an Arizona Cardinals’ defense with quarterback pressure and veteran leadership-something the Falcons are starving to find and it made perfect sense to sign him because he fills the voids left by the attrition of today’s NFL.

I remember watching Freeney play with the Cardinals at the close of last year and think to myself,” man, he would’ve been great for Atlanta this year.” But, alas, we saw Freeney help hold down the defense that led to the Cardinals having a fantastic record last year, and Freeney was a major piece of the momentum that Arizona caught on defense.

Now that Atlanta has chosen to pass on Freeney for the second time, I wonder if, next year, we’ll see an all-too-familiar visitor entertaining the idea of Atlanta as a home for him? That said, maybe the third time’s the charm for these two sides(Atlanta and Freeney, and, as the saying goes, there’s always next year.

This is yet another mistake made by this front office. Freeney would’ve been incredibly valuable for a team like Atlanta.
