Should The Falcons Acquire Free Agent TE Martellus Bennett?
Tight end Martellus Bennett was released on Wednesday by the Packers which begs the question of whether the Atlanta Falcons should consider adding him
Green Bay Packers’ tight end Martellus Bennett was released from the team Wednesday for failing to reveal a shoulder injury that kept him out of the team’s Week 9 game vs the Detroit Lions. Bennett was signed in the offseason to be an efficient target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers but that changed after Rodgers broke his collarbone last month. This resulted in decreasing production from Bennett.
Prior to signing with the Packers, Bennett had one of the best seasons of his career in 2016 as he won a Super Bowl with the Patriots. In the regular season, he totaled 55 receptions for 701 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2017, he has 24 receptions for 233 yards and no touchdowns.

As with any player that’s released by a team, other fan bases ponder of the thought of that player coming to their team. That is the case for speculation of Bennett coming to Atlanta.
The Falcons are already set at the depth chart at tight end with Austin Hooper and Levine Toilolo. Hooper has been efficient in keep drives going for the Falcons but has experienced some setbacks which include a series of dropped passes.
The only way that Bennett could be considered to be signed by the Falcons is if Hooper or Toilolo go down with a significant injury. Bennett has been a solid player throughout his career but his shoulder injury has been plaguing him this season and he came out on Twitter at the end of October saying this could wind up being his last season. Bennett’s current injury might also force him to contemplate retiring now as opposed to finding another team.
