Trufant in concussion protocol, Freeman hopeful vs Vikings
Atlanta Falcons corner back Desmond Trufant is in concussion protocol. How will that impact the Falcons moving forward?
Atlanta Falcons corner back Desmond Trufant suffered a concussion in the second quarter of the Falcons 34-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Trufant sustained this injury as a result of colliding with teammate safety Keanu Neal. Trufant is now in the concussion protocol, per Atlanta Head Coach Dan Quinn. Due to this process, he would most likely not play in the Falcons crucial Week 13 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
Falcons running back Devonta Freeman missed the last three games with a concussion sustained in the Falcons win vs the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10. Quinn noted that Freeman is still in the concussion protocol. The Falcons are hopeful though that he can return to play this week, per ProFootballTalk. Atlanta running back Tevin Coleman has replaced Freeman as a starter for the past two weeks and his productivity has been exceptional. In the win against Tampa Bay, Coleman rushed for 97 yards on 19 carries which resulted in two touchdowns.

The Falcons also lost corner back Brian Poole to a back injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s game. Coach Quinn has listed him as day-to-day. Falcons safety Ricardo Allen was inserted into the nickel back position in place of Poole. Atlanta rookie defensive back Damontae Kazee was used at safety. Coach Quinn applauded his secondary making the proper adjustments in the midst of the injuries piling up. Particularly, Quinn noted that play of Allen.
"“As you know, we had two corners go down in Poole and Tru during the game…I thought a lot of [pride] was shown by the [defensive backs] answering when they had to, specifically Ricardo who was in a new spot.” – Coach Quinn (per D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution)"
This has been the second time in over a year that Desmond Trufant has been derailed by injury. A pectoral injury forced him to miss most of the 2016 season which included the Falcons Super Bowl run.
