Stop the insanity, Matt Ryan passed Vick in 2009
By Matt Siegman
Historically the Atlanta Falcons have not been that great of a franchise. Matt Ryan has helped to change the Falcons narrative over the last 11 years.
In the late 90’s the Atlanta Falcons turned a new lead and started winning. They made their first super bowl appearance in 1998. They also had two franchise QB with Matt Ryan and Michael Vick.
Both QB’s had great seasons with the Atlanta Falcons making the franchise relevant and giving fans hope that they never had before. The Falcons traded up in the 2001 NFL Draft and selected Michael Vick with the first overall pick. They selected Matt Ryan with the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
For some odd reason the Falcons fan-base is split when people ask who the better QB is. The correct answer is Matt Ryan and it is not even close. Matt Ryan has already had a better career and accomplished much more for this franchise than Vick.
Vick spent six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before he had his incident. Three years later he joined the Eagles and stayed with them from 2009-2013. He then spent a season with the Jets and Steelers before retiring. Vick was an electric player and exiting to watch because of how athletic he was. When you look at his stats, they are disappointing.
In his thirteen seasons in the NFL Vick played all sixteen games in a season once in his career during the 2006 season. Injuries were the biggest down fall to his career. While his rushing stats are impressive for a QB his passing stats are disappoint. Vick had one 3,000 yard season and it was with the Eagles during the 2011 season.
Matt Ryan on the other hand has had monster passing seasons and won the NFC Championship in 2016. Vick only took the Falcons to the NFC Championship. Ryan has had eight straight 4,000 yard seasons and won MVP during the 2016 season. While Vick was a good player and carried the Falcons, he never won the MVP award.
When Vick was with the Atlanta Falcons he only had two winning seasons in 2002 with a 9-6-1 record and in 2004 with an 11-5 record. Matt Ryan has had seven winning seasons with Falcons and four playoffs wins with a Super Bowl appearance.
Many fans biggest arguments for Vick over Ryan is his 2004 Madden rating. Vick was incredible in the video game but Madden ratings have nothing to do his play on the field.
Both quarterbacks have had fantastic seasons for the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan is clearly the better QB because he dominates Vick in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and wins. Ryan is already dominating and he still has plenty of seasons left with the team.
