Arthur Blank has yet to hire the right head coach for the Atlanta Falcons
By Deen Worley
Dan Quinn has the Atlanta Falcons sitting at 3-9 on the season, officially marking back to back losing seasons for the Atlanta Falcons.
Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn entered this season on a very hot seat, and that seat only got hotter as each week progressed. Atlanta Falcons fans have made their displeasure greatly heard in numerous ways
The last time the Atlanta Falcons had back to back losing season was 2013-2014, the 2014 season saw the end of Mike Smith. In the past 20 years of football, the Atlanta Falcons have only had back-to-back losing seasons four times; including 2018 and 2019.
Under Arthur Blank’s ownership (since 2002), the Atlanta Falcons have never seen back-to-back-to-back losing seasons.
Blank’s tenure as the owner of the Falcons has only endured seven losing seasons. This also makes a strong case for him to not sell the franchise. Also, under Blank, the head coach has been fired each time they have a back-to-back losing season or a losing season in general.
- Jim Mora Jr- Fired in 2006 after one losing season
- Bobby Petrino – Worst coach in the history of ever. Quit in 2007 after 13 games
- Mike Smith – Five straight winning seasons, fired after 2014 after back to back losing seasons
Dan Quinn has the Atlanta Falcons on track to finish last in the NFC South for the first time since 2007. What a mess that season was.
The future looks dark for Dan Quinn in Atlanta. After three straight seasons of being 8-8 or higher, 2019 should mark the end of Dan Quinn.
But why has Dan Quinn not been fired yet?
Arthur Blank had every reason fire Dan Quinn less than five weeks into the season. It was even speculated that Dan Quinn wouldn’t even last past the bye week.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers fired head coach Ron Rivera after teetering as a .500 team. Team owner David Tepper and former coach Ron Rivera never saw eye to eye and was surprisingly allowed to continue coachings as 2019 started.
Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has made his strained relationship with head coach Jason Garrett publicly known this season. The Cowboys can win their division and still not resign Garrett.
However, Arthur Blank loves stability and respects his staff. Blank has come out and said he was disappointed as to how this season has gone, however unlike Jones and Tepper, Blank has stated multiple times that he supports his staff and that he believes they have the ability to turn the tide.
Arthur Blank’s ownership methods are also seen when presiding over his soccer team Atlanta United.
While dealing with the tough task of replacing manager Gerardo Martino, Blank brought in Dutch manager Frank De Boer.
Blank stood firm by De Boer throughout the entire season through all the boos by fans and frustration by players.
Blank’s loyalty and respect have gotten Dan Quinn into Week 14.
A loss in Week 14 to the Carolina Panthers, could push Blank to finally pulling the trigger. One can assume that David Tepper firing Ron Rivera would put more pressure on Dan Quinn to perform against Carolina.
If the Atlanta Falcons can get a win this weekend, then it’s safe to assume Dan Quinn will be the head coach until black Monday or that Sunday night.
