Atlanta Falcons release Safety JJ Wilcox, add two new to practice squad
By Justin Lee
The Atlanta Falcons made several roster moves this week.
The Atlanta Falcons picked up their first win of the season in week six against Minnesota, and are now preparing for their game against the Detroit Lions. Veteran safety J.J. Wilcox was released this Tuesday and linebacker James Burgess signed by the Green Bay Packers.
The Falcons did, however, sign two new players to the practice squad. Linebacker Pita Taumoepenu and safety Shyheim Carter were added on Tuesday.
These may be two names some of you have never heard of before, so let’s dive deeper into what they have done in their career, and how they can help this team moving forward.
Atlanta Falcons add two to the practice squad this week.
Pita Taumoepenu
Pita is an outside linebacker from the University of Utah. He was drafted in 2017 by the San Francisco 49ers where he only played two games his rookie season. In those two games, Pita did not log a single stat.
In 2018, Pita played four games for San Francisco. In those four games, he logged three total tackles. He was cut in 2018 and has been on practice squads ever since. He now joins the Atlanta Falcons practice squad.
Shyheim Carter
Shyheim Carter played safety at the University of Alabama in 2019, going undrafted in this past year’s draft.
At Alabama, he started 23 games in his 50 game career. He finished with a total of 43 tackles and a couple interceptions.
Looking at some of his film, I’m getting the sense he is a zone coverage safety, something Atlanta could use right now.
No, these players are not amazing and do not have the most talent in the world. However, they do have a hunger to come in and immediately help this team. At a 1-5 record on the season, the Falcons could use all the help they could get.
