The Atlanta Falcons confirm they are a bad football team
By Ross Terrell
The Atlanta Falcons confirmed Sunday what we already knew: they are a bad football team.
The Atlanta Falcons are a three-win team for a reason. Bad defense, bad offense, and questionable play-calling continue to plague the team.
Just how bad were they against the New Orleans Saints? At one point in the 4th quarter, they had a total of -4 yards on offense. A pro team, with the likes of Matt Ryan, Calvin Ridley, and the ghost of Todd Gurley – who we just didn’t see in the second half – managed to do nothing but lose yards.
And then, later in the quarter, on their best drive, Matt Ryan tossed his second pick of the game. The Falcons seem to lack the ability to make adjustments in games.
It’s how you allow teams to come back from double-digit leads, you don’t adjust to what they’re doing.
It’s how you go into halftime, down 10-9, with your quarterback under siege all Sunday and not manage to score a single point, only to give up multiple scores.
It’s not just halftime adjustments, per a stat shown on the Fox telecast during the game, the Falcons gave up nine sacks against the Saints last Thanksgiving, and another eight on Sunday. That’s unacceptable football.
The defense played well enough for Atlanta Falcons to win.
Their pass rush looked, respectable at best and their secondary continues to struggle. But they got absolutely no help from the offense. Atlanta holding the Saints to 24 points, at home, even with Taysom Hill at quarterback, Alvin Kamara in the backfield, and Michael Thomas, is a win. The Falcons though failed to play team ball yet again.
After Gurley scored the most regrettable touchdown of his career against the Lions a few weeks ago, the talk shifted to the defense needs to be able to complete the deal. They should’ve been able to stop the Lions from driving downfield, with no timeouts and about a minute left. The Falcons managed three field goals for an entire game. Coming off a bye-week.
That, again, is unacceptable. If the Falcons were hanging on to any glimmer of hope to make a magical postseason run, well, that evaporated after they failed to score a touchdown all game.
Loss aside, the Falcons learned they don’t have what it takes to keep up with playoff-bound teams. It’s just scary to think what might happen when they face the Chiefs, Bucs twice, and Saints again. Don’t be shocked if the Falcons end the season with five wins, because that’s the type of team they look like.
As for the next main thing they should be preparing for, Atlanta Falcons, you are on the clock for the 2021 NFL Draft.
