Atlanta Falcons five biggest active cap hits in 2022
By Nick Halden
1. Unsurprisingly it is veteran quarterback Matt Ryan who is the largest cap hit for the Atlanta Falcons coming in at $48.6-million
Matt Ryan is the Atlanta Falcons quarterback next season despite rumors or what some pundits may suggest. Ryan is still playing at a high level and capable of carrying Atlanta into the playoffs if Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenot can bring in off-season help.
The offensive line needs to be patched and Ryan needs at least two capable receivers that he currently lacks. Even if Atlanta were to entertain moving Ryan it would save them only $8-million and give Atlanta a $40-million dollar dead cap hit.
For all intents and purposes, Ryan is Atlanta’s quarterback for at least another season. After 2022 Atlanta has some flexibility as to whether they want to move on from the veteran or attempt to sign him to a team-friendly deal.
Similar to how Tom Brady or Phillip Rivers have handled their contracts in later seasons. Taking deals that left enough flexibility to build teams around them in their later seasons. This is the ideal situation for an Atlanta Falcons team that lacks a clear answer at the position if they moved off of Ryan after next season.
