Round One (Eighth overall)

First mock: Kyle Hamilton, Safety (Notre Dame)

Current Selection: Kyle Hamilton, Safety (Notre Dame)

This can’t be right here, can it? Last time, the Falcons somehow were in a position to land a wide receiver (more on that later). In fact, look at most of the “expert” picks, and they’re saying the Falcons will be taking Garrett Wilson out of Ohio State or maybe even Jameson Williams (?!), which would be a HUGE mistake for this front office.

Looking at this draft, at first, it was near impossible for this staff to potentially pick a quarterback. While they’d be taking a massive risk and should just stick with Mariota this year and then have a chance with a lot of cap space next year, maybe they go this route, but it’s not recommended.

In the first mock, Hamilton falling to the Falcons seemed like an impossibility as many had him going no later than fifth overall, seeing the Giants say “thank you very much” to their “New York” brethren in the Jets.

This time around, Hamilton appears to be falling because of his 40-yard-dash time at his Pro Day, which was nearly one-tenth of a second slower than what he ran at the Combine.

Folks, come on now. Now all of a sudden, we’re going to ignore the tape on Hamilton because of a 40-yard-dash time? We’re just going to say that Hamilton’s tape doesn’t show an anomaly in the deep third that can play sideline-to-sideline and can even crash the box from time to time?

If the Falcons want to truly show they’re wanting to compete in 2022, as they’ve claimed to their fans, they shouldn’t select an offensive player in the first round. Not with a litany of great talent they can procure later.

Instead, focus on the glaring weakness of this team, which resulted in multiple blowout losses and choke jobs over the last 56 years.

Take Hamilton now, or maybe even Sauce Gardner (admittedly picked by the Giants seventh in this mock), and enjoy security in the pass defense.

You know, since the Falcons are laughably pathetic in this regard?
