Where does Marcus Mariota rank among NFC South Quarterbacks?
By Nick Halden
3. Marcus Mariota
Marcus Mariota’s career has been unfairly framed at times when you consider the offensive line and skill players that were around him when he was a starter with the Titans. Just as the team was turning it around Mariota had two rough games and was benched in favor of Ryan Tannehill the team never looked back and yet still has found the same amount of playoff success.
In fairness, the Titans weren’t winning a Super Bowl with Marcus Mariota at quarterback and neither are the Atlanta Falcons. Mariota is a limited passer who can make things happen outside the pocket and is going to keep an offense entertaining for better or worse.
The problem for the Falcons is going to be the fact they have a quarterback who likes to move around and an offensive line who doesn’t seem to want to block pass rushers with any consistency.
Mariota at this point in his career is a high-quality backup or a mid-level bridge starter who will keep the offense watchable in Atlanta. With Kyle Pitts, Drake London, Bryan Edwards, and Cordarrelle Patterson at his disposal, Mariota is going to have some great moments for the Atlanta Falcons this season. However, he is also going to have rough moments that remind his team and the league why he isn’t the franchise-saving quarterback he was thought to be heading into the draft.
