What is left to say about this Atlanta Falcons team? They are bad, simple as that, and that was pretty obvious in the home opener, a 34-3 blowout loss against the reigning NFC South champion Carolina Panthers.
Their offense has ruined everything. Cooper Rush was so bad that he convinced Kevin Stefanski to bench him for an undrafted free agent (albeit a hyped-up UDFA). The veteran is in position to be released this week -- crazy considering he was the opening-day starter.
No doubt it was hard to find winners, and it was easy to find losers. We don't have enough time to cover all the losers.
The Falcons have been the joke of the league through two weeks
Loser: Tommy Rees, OC
To think a team can fail to make it into the redzone in two games is hard to imagine. Everyone was worried about this hire, and we have seen nothing to suggest we were incorrect.
Playing your third-string quarterback or not, there is no excuse not to have a red zone appearance. You have Bijan Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and others, along with a solid offensive line that can cover up for poor quarterback play. Yet, here we are.
Winner: Brian Robinson, RB
Brian Robinson has shown he can be a strong complement to Bijan Robinson. He entered the game in the first half and sparked the run game. To that point, they had been held in check. He finished with 11 carries for 51 yards.
Loser: Cooper Rush, QB
Rush has done nothing to make us think he will survive the short week. First play fumble, second drive interception, and then he threw another later. These weren't unlucky plays; they were bad mistakes that a veteran should not be making.
Assuming Michael Penix Jr. and/or Tua Tagovailoa return this week, Rush will be released.
Winner: Za'Darius Smith, DE
The late signing has proved to be the signing of the year for the Falcons. The veteran came out of retirement without losing a step. He tacked on half a sack to his two from last week, as well as another tackle for loss and pass defense. He made many other plays as well.
Loser: Mike Hughes, CB
The Falcons lost A.J. Terrell early and never recovered. The other starter, Mike Hughes, struggled mightily without his counterpart. He was burned repeatedly and was a big reason the Panthers put up 34 points.
Winner: Avieon Terrell, CB
On the other side of the spectrum, Avieon Terrell has played great early in his career. Honestly, he might've been the best defender the Dirty Birds had on the field. He was busy breaking up passes and locking down whoever he went against. The future is bright for him.
Loser: Everyone else
This team is in disarray. There is no chemistry, discipline, or heart. Drake London looked like the only offensive player who was torn down by this loss -- as he should be. Michael Penix Jr. is their last hope for a decent season.
