Following a statement victory over the San Francisco 49ers last week, the Atlanta Falcons had a prime opportunity to take control of the NFC South in Week 8, especially with the Panthers floundering after two straight losses--but a date with the Bucs would be easier said than done.
The rivalry matchup had a lot of emotions on both sides. Florida native Michael Penix Jr. was making his first career start in Tampa Bay, Baker Mayfield and Kevin Stefanski had an ugly breakup in Cleveland, and Bucs OC Zac Robinson was bracing for his first matchup against his former team.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, this one was about as ugly as it gets. The pouring rain in Tampa made it tough for both teams to move the football, but whatever you expected, it was worse, as Atlanta was blanked 16-0 as the offense sputtered, the defense got gashed, and nothing went their way today.
Frankly, they looked straight-up discombobulated and possibly still hungover from some Halloween partying, so let's just dive into the instant reactions.
The Atlanta Falcons are coming off of their worst loss of 2026 on Sunday
Michael Penix Jr. looked awful, but don't give up on him just yet
Michael Penix Jr. entered Sunday with just one interception on the season, and it came on his opening drive against the Green Bay Packers. The best thing he's done this season is take care of the football, and unfortunately, he wasn't able to do much of that as it was not his day in Tampa Bay.
Penix, who grew up in Dade City which is just north of Tampa had 30+ family and friends there to watch him at Raymond James Stadium, and unfortunately, he delivered the worst start of his NFL career. He threw four interceptions, and three of them game in the first half alone. It was truly awful.

The unfortunate part is that this could have been so much worse. He could have thrown a fifth pick, but Jahan Dotson saved him from it, and he missed Kyle Pitts on what would've been a long touchdown. So while he's looked like a franchise QB this season, today he looked very replaceable.
It's easy to be frustrated with what we saw today, but this Bucs' defense is legit, and between that and the weather, Penix doesn't deserve all of the blame for what we saw today. When you draft a young QB, you take the highs and lows of their development, and they have no choice but to stick with him--especially after that double-coverage dime he delivered to Jahan Dotson in garbage time.

The defense tried to make up for the offense's issues, but it wasn't enough
All day for the Dirty Birds it was unforced errors that sank them. Those four Penix interceptions and a missed field goal on the opening drive set the defense up in unfavorable positions all day, and while they won the turnover battle last week, losing the turnover battle this week is where things went awry.
Despite those issues, this Atlanta defense held the Bucs to field goals on three of their first four drives despite that field position, and they also prevented a touchdown with a well-timed peanut-punch in the red zone, but ultimately the offense's issues became too much for them to bear.
As the game progressed, game script allowed the Bucs to do what they do best, pound the rock, and it made it harder for Atlanta to stop it. They ran the football over 50 times for 300 yards as Baker Mayfield failed to record a single completion in his "revenge game" against Kevin Stefanski.. They were the first team to win a game with no completions since 1974. That is truly pathetic.
Jeff Ulbrich should've known going in that Zac Robinson wanted to make a less-than-100% Mayfield do as little as possible to affect this matchup, and against one of the best rushing offenses in the NFL, the circumstances made it impossible for one of the league's best run defenses to step up.
Jessie Bates is playing his way into a major payday
There wasn't much to be excited about for the Falcons in this one, but Jessie Bates has once again come through for this defense. He has become one of the better "peanut-punch" players in the NFL, and for the second straight week, he came through with a peanut punch to force a fumble.
In the first Bucky Irving had an easy rushing touchdown after a lateral from Mayfield, but instead, Bates met him at the goal line and punched out the football, which sailed out of the back of the end zone for a touchback--which saved the Atlanta deficit from getting to 10 points if not for this play.

The star safety has been playing out of his mind across these last couple of weeks, especially in regards to forcing turnovers, and as we all know he's in a contract year, so the Falcons better sign him to a long-term contract extension. His impact on this defense has been immeasurable of late.
It's time to consider ending the Nick Folk experiment
The Falcons signed Nick Folk to a three-year deal in free agency thinking he'd be the answer to their kicking woes, but unfortunately, Father Time has caught up with Folk, as even without the elements, his miss from 53 yards on the opening drive was one of the worst misses I've ever seen.

The guy wasn't even close. He was a good five feet away from even being close, so there's a reason Stefanski is losing trust in him. On their next two looks from field goal range, Atlanta chose to go for it, instead of go for the points, and they threw a pick on the first and failed to convert the second.
The 41-year-old has missed three of his four looks from 50+ on the year, and it's clear his range isn't there anymore, so it might be time to start looking for his long-term successor.
This lack of consistency is infuriating
There is no team in the NFL more difficult to predict than the Atlanta Falcons. Some weeks they look like they can compete with anyone, and others they look like a pee-wee team. Every single week it's a guess of which team will show up, and never can we see this team look great several weeks in a row.
How did we go from beating the 6-0 49ers last week to getting destroyed by the 2-5 Bucs the very next week? This team makes no sense. Play-calling is never consistent and it's hard to see this team as one with legit playoff hopes when you have no idea what you'll get on a given Sunday.
The Falcons are incredibly feast-or-famine, and while this new regime has done a lot of things well, this is the one area we thought would be fixed without Raheem Morris. They had a prime chance to take control of the division today after last week, yet even that feels like too much to ask of this team.
