Little-known Falcons defender may be carving out a real role going forward

Despite having no true Micah Parsons or Will Anderson-level star on the defensive line, the Atlanta Falcons' pass-rush has surprisingly been among the best in football in 2026. Everyone expected the production to suffer without Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., but that hasn't been the case.

Through four weeks of the season, the Falcons lead the NFL in pressures and are top-five in pressure rate, which is a testament to the job Nate Ollie and Jeff Ulbrich have done, because they have helped some lesser-known names step up, carve real roles, and also enjoy the best seasons of their careers.

For all of the buzz guys like Cameron Thomas and Samson Ebukam are receiving, they are not the only Falcons pass-rushers breaking out in real time.

Just a couple of weeks before the season, Atlanta claimed LB Yasir Adbullah off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars after he was released during final roster cuts-and while not everyone knows his name yet, he's making sure everyone will remember it after his performance in Week 4's victory.

In the Falcons' 45-24 blowout win over the New Orleans Saints, they got pressure on Tyler Shough 36 times for a staggering 49% of his drop-backs (per Next Gen Stats), which saw Abdullah enjoy a career day. In a season-high 37 snaps played, he logged five pressures (including four QB hits), both of which marked the best single-game totals of his career.

Based off that alone, this guy should be in for a larger role going forward.

Yasir Abdullah has exceeded expectations with the Atlanta Falcons

Abdullah was predominantly a special teamer across his three years in Jacksonville, but he's now becoming a quality contributor for an Atlanta defense that has been humming in 2026. Nobody was expecting him to be anything more than a depth guy, but no one can turn water into wine like Jeff Ulbrich.

For starters, the Dirty Birds moved Abdullah from linebacker to edge rusher when they signed him to ensure he'd be able to rotate in defensively. And at the time, the notion was that Jared Ivey would take on the role he's been playing, but instead, the 26-year-old has made a presumably made a bigger impression on this Falcons' staff.

At 6-foot-1 and 241 pounds with 4.47 speed, Abdullah was always going to be one of those players Ulbrich fell in love with. It's almost like there's an aspect of Kaden Elliss to his game, because he's versatile enough to play both positions and is great at getting to the QB, so if this staff really wanted to, they could morph him into their new Elliss.

The 2023 fifth-round pick out of Louisville has quietly been one of Atlanta's better free-agent pickups, especially given he only made just three NFL starts before this season. That makes what he's done all the more impressive, especially considering he's only been with this team for five weeks.

Yasir Abdullah is the latest diamond in the rough the Falcons' defense has found, and after he kept getting to Tyler Shough in Week 4, he's earned a higher snap share going forward--which should start in Week 5.
