When the Atlanta Falcons signed Cameron Thomas in free agency, they didn't expect him to to be any more than a rotational pass-rusher. He was supposed to play behind Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., but since they're both currently out, Thomas has been thrust into a larger role than expected.

Across these first three weeks, the Falcons' main edge trio has been Thomas, Samson Ebukam, and Za'Darius Smith, and all of them have exceeded expectations. But Smith and Ebukam have been productive before, Thomas came to Atlanta as nothing more than a journeyman whom Kevin Stefanski previously coached in Cleveland., yet has still been one of their best pickups.

However, he's proven to be capable of a whole lot more this year. In the first two weeks, he was solid, but the dominant Week 3 win over the Packers was when he really turned it up. In a season-high 45 snaps, he recorded seven pressures and six QB hits of Jordan Love in a night where Atlanta's defensive line made light work of the Green Bay offensive line.

Cameron Thomas has been one of the Falcons' best offseason pickups

Thomas is a big reason as to why the Falcons lead the NFL in pass-rush win rate and lead the NFL in pressure rate. Look at his numbers on the year to date...

  • 1.5 sacks
  • 1 TFL
  • 8 QB hits
  • 12 pressures
  • 1 forced fumble
  • 7 combined tackles

For reference, his eight QB hits already set a new career-high after he recorded seven in 17 games last year.

The 26-year-old was also among the top five in the NFL in pass rush wins entering Week 3 (alongside both Brandon Dorlus and Maason Smith), but the breakout season doesn't end there. Thomas' eight QB hits are tied with Dallas Turner and Greg Rousseau for the NFL lead--and Rousseau is the current Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner with six sacks in 2026.

According to Pro Football Focus, Thomas also led the NFL with seven QB knockdowns in Week 3, while his 89.0 PFF grade led the team. So while Smith and Gervon Dexter Sr. have received more attention for how they have elevated the pass-rush, let's make sure we aren't forgetting about the 2022 third-round pick.

It doesn't matter what the circumstances are. The Dirty Birds signed Thomas to a one-year contract worth $3 million this past March, and has drastically out-played the terms of this prove-it deal. At this point, he's become someone will still have a role once Pearce returns from his suspension in Week 9.

Nobody saw the San Diego State product's breakout year coming but sometimes the best things come when you least expect it. He's never been a true starter in his NFL career to date, so him not only getting a shot in Atlanta, but stepping up in their moment of need has been a pleasant surprise.

Ian Cunningham's strategy in free agency was to turn to the bargain bin since the Falcons had limited cap space, and by signing Cameron Thomas, a low-stakes addition has become far better than we ever anticipated.
