Skip Bayless is not happy with the Cleveland Browns after the team named Deshaun Watson its starting quarterback, and he has already decided where Shedeur Sanders should go next… The Atlanta Falcons.
"Do I think Shedeur Sanders this coming football season could win more games than Penix or Tua could win? You better believe that I do," Bayless said on Twitter.
He followed that up with an even stronger claim.
"Shedeur Sanders is better than either quarterback that the Atlanta Falcons have right now that they're trying to decide between."
That is certainly an opinion. It also ignores one pretty important detail: Kevin Stefanski is the Falcons' head coach. Stefanski already chose Dillon Gabriel over Sanders in the NFL Draft. The Falcons don't have the same quarterback situation they had a few months ago, either.
The Atlanta Falcons don't need another QB, especially not Shedeur Sanders
Penix has now been medically cleared to return to full team practice after suffering a torn ACL last season, and Stefanski has confirmed that he and Tagovailoa will compete for the starting job.
So Atlanta would have to trade for Sanders while already trying to figure out which of two quarterbacks should lead the team. That alone makes Bayless' proposal difficult to take seriously. The Stefanski connection makes it even stranger.
Bayless is essentially suggesting that Sanders should be traded to the team coached by the same man who chose Gabriel ahead of him and then gave Gabriel the majority of the first team work.
Adding Shedeur Sanders to the Atlanta Falcons QB room would mean throwing another young guy into the mix and potentially giving up an asset to do it. We've been through this song and dance once this week, and somehow this idea is even more nonsensical.
It also makes little sense from Sanders' perspective. If the goal is to find a team that believes in him, why would Atlanta be the obvious answer when Stefanski already had him in Cleveland and chose to build around Gabriel instead?
Now the Browns' decision to start Watson can absolutely (and I think should) be criticized. Sanders may deserve another opportunity somewhere if Cleveland eventually decides to move him. And Bayless is certainly entitled to believe Sanders is better than Penix and Tua.
The Falcons already have two good quarterbacks fighting for the starting job. Their coach already knows Sanders well. And that coach previously preferred another rookie quarterback when he had both players available.
Maybe the former Colorado standout eventually proves everybody wrong. That is entirely possible. But Shedeur Sanders to the Atlanta Falcons just does not make sense for anybody.
