After receiving some bad news that the Atlanta Falcons would not sign corner back Brandon Boykin, the team got some good news immediately after.

14-year veteran pass rusher Dwight Freeney is set to visit with the Falcons at some point next week. Freeney has 119.5 career sacks and is coming off of an 8-sack year with the Arizona Cardinals.

The most sacks a player on the Falcons had last season was four from Vic Beasley.

Signing Freeney makes a ton of sense. Beasley is no longer going to play leo on first and second down and having a proven veteran like Freeney to step in and play that role would be tremendous. Not only would he give the Falcons a great boost, but he would also act as a mentor.

What if things came down to either signing Boykin or signing Freeney. Which one would you choose? I think it would be pretty dumb not to pick Freeney seeing as he is likely a future hall-of-famer but that’s just my opinion.

Who knows what will happen after Freeney visits. Atlanta doesn’t really have the best track record when it comes to signing free agents that everyone things that they will so don’t bank on them signing Freeney.

Everyone and their cousin thought that the Falcons were going to sign Boykin after his latest workout with the team but we all see how that turned out.

I would feel a lot more comfortable with Freeney on the team than I would without him. Is he another Osi Umenyiora? I highly doubt that. Umenyiora was a bad signing from the get go and his time in Atlanta was doomed from day one.

Freeney on the other hand has shown no signs of slowing down. The only reason teams are afraid to sign him to more than a one-year deal is his age. Playing in the NFL until you’re 36 years old is an accomplishment in itself. But the talent level is still there.

Freeney will meet with the Cincinnati Bengals before visiting the Falcons so lets hope they don’t offer him a contract before we can.
