The one secondary player that is still available that the Atlanta Falcons could use is former Bengals Safety Derron Smith. Smith spent two seasons in the NFL, all in the AFC North, with the Bengals and an off-season with the Browns. We know firsthand in Atlanta all about Browns retreads and Smith could be part of that group which has seen Alex Mack continue to flourish and Taylor Gabriel become one of the best third options in the NFL.

During Smith’s eight-week career in the Alliance of American Football, according to Pro Football Focus, he graded out as the league’s highest player, has three interceptions and eight pass deflections. Given the need to improve our secondary here in Atlanta, adding a depth piece like Derron Smith could go a long way in helping the Falcons develop better depth and competition in the secondary that right now only features Rico Allen, Damontae Kazee and Sharrod Neasman.

Smith is going to get another shot at the NFL and while he may not be ready to be a starter for the Falcons or other Super Bowl contending clubs at the moment, it is clear that he has been able to develop into a ball hawk type safety and a team like the Falcons could absolutely use his services.
