1. The cap situation doesn’t improve that much if Atlanta were to move off of Matt Ryan

One of the underreported storylines of the previous off-season is the extension between the Falcons and Matt Ryan. This extension ties Ryan to Atlanta for this season and the next after that they can explore their options without being tied to Ryan.

Next season trading or cutting Ryan would be a painful move cap-wise and limits their options. It is for this reason Atlanta cannot be in the off-season race for Deshaun Watson or Aaron Rodgers. Two quarterbacks expected to be on the market who are both objectively better than Matt Ryan.

If the Falcons were going to move off of Ryan that would be the time. But with the way his contract is constructed it isn’t going to work to chase one of the top quarterbacks who may or may not be on the market this off-season.

Ryan’s contract is reasonable when you look at the current price of quarterbacks around the league.  While his cap number hurts it is league average when you look at comparable players at his position. By the time the contract runs its course it is more likely it appears to be a bargain with the ever-increasing prices at the position.
