The biggest headline for the Falcons is who will be the starting quarterback to open up the season

Do the Falcons end up starting the veteran QB Marcus Mariota or the rookie QB Desmond Ridder when they take on their rivals to open the season? It is the biggest question fans have had and they cannot wait to see what the answer is.

Matt Ryan was the starting for over a decade, and the Falcons are in a position they have not been in for such a long time. This is new territory for many fans as we have all become so used to seeing Ryan’s name in permanent marker atop the depth chart.

Marcus Mariota certainly has the edge right now as he has played for Arthur Smith before when they both were with the Titans. Not to mention, the simple fact that he has been in the NFL since 2015. The experience is invaluable.

However, many would love to see Desmond Ridder start from day one. We all have seen Mariota play in the NFL but no one has seen what Ridder can do in the pros.

Desmond Ridder is also likely the future of the organization and it will be difficult to wait even longer to see what they really have in him.

If Ridder comes out slinging the ball in the training camp and preseason, Arthur Smith will not shy away from giving him the starting job but the chances of the rookie getting the playbook down and outplaying the veteran are low.

While it seems like Marcus Mariota will end up with the job, it will still be the most intriguing position battle for the Falcons in the coming months.
