Atlanta Falcons key #2: Don’t overcomplicate things on offense

It has been frustrating when the Atlanta Falcons overthink things on offense and try to be something that they are not. It is much of the reason they lost on Sunday to the Chargers.

So, what does this offense excel at doing? The obvious answer is running the ball, but they also have had success throwing to the intermediate area of the field, it is where Marcus Mariota is most accurate.

Arthur Smith needs to realize that Mariota is an awful deep passer. Sometimes they just need to throw out all the deep passing plays and instead focus on maximizing every down.

Run the ball with your physical running backs and then throw play-action passes off of it at about 10 to 20 yards down the field. We don’t need to see Mariota throw a deep pass to a double-covered Damiere Byrd or overthrow a wide-open Kyle Pitts anymore, especially on Thursday Night Football

Of course, everyone loves and wants to see explosive plays. It is extremely entertaining and exciting, but what is even more entertaining and exciting is winning and being able to watch this team make the playoffs. Stop trying to be something you are not.
