McGary is the biggest free agent of Atlanta’s off-season with the right tackle looking to cash in after a great season. McGary is one year removed from being a disaster with Atlanta deciding not to use the option on his rookie deal and looking for possible replacements in free agency.
One year later and McGary will be a top free agent and took a huge leap forward looking like an entirely different player for much of the season. The problem for Atlanta is judging whether this was a natural progression or an outlier of a season that means McGary is due for regression.
Paying McGary is the easiest path, keeping the entire offensive line together and giving The problem with this deal is the cost, it is likely to take nearly a third of Atlanta’s cap space to bring back McGary with a contract likely in the $15-20 million range. Keeping McGary is going to cost Atlanta but if the team is unwilling to spend an early draft pick on the position or make a trade it is hard to see another option. Re-signing McGary is a risk but it can be argued letting the lineman walk is a bigger one if the contract remains reasonable to keep what was a great 2022 offensive line together.
