It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why the Atlanta Falcons signed Cameron Thomas in free agency. He spent the last two seasons playing for Kevin Stefanski in Cleveland, and Atlanta brought him in to offer some much-needed depth behind their franchise cornerstones on the defensive line.
The Falcons wanted Thomas to take on a rotational role behind Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., but some unintended consequences may have thrust him into a larger role than expected. Walker suffered a season-ending ACL tear during practice last week, while Pearce is likely facing a suspension after his offseason arrest.
The Falcons badly need someone to step up on their defensive line with both men sidelined. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and it's not hyperbole to say that Cameron Thomas has to step up. Stefanski trusts him, and if Pearce does face NFL discipline, he'll have to answer the call.

With Walker sidelined, the Falcons' pass-rush group consists of Thomas, Azeez Ojulari, Samson Ebukam, and Bralen Trice, That rotation isn't going to cut it, so barring a trade or free agent signing, he badly needs to step up unless Brandon Dorlus or Harold Perkins Jr. start to get more edge looks.
Early returns in training camp suggest that the 26-year-old is in for a larger role with the Dirty Birds now. Thomas was reportedly the the one taking first-team reps opposite Ebukam in Walker's place, has performed well all things considered, making it clear that this DL has no choice but to rely on him.

Here's the issue with trusting the 2022 third-round pick with such massive shoes to fill: across 58 career games, he's mustered just 6.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and 79 combined tackles. And unfortunately, still has a better track record than Trice, who has no NFL experience under his belt.
The San Diego State product signed with Atlanta looking for a second wind, and now the Falcons need him to offer one. Hopefully he can turn back the clock to his final college season with the Aztecs, where he recorded 11.5 sacks and 20 TFLs and was named a second-team All-American.
It likely isn't what Jeff Ulbrich and Nate Ollie envisioned on the defensive line, but nobody was expecting the Falcons to be without Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., Cameron Thomas otherwise likely would've been on the roster bubble, but now he's a roster lock--and needs to offer a return on investment on a low-stakes deal since they have no choice but to trust him.
