Since being released by the Atlanta Falcons, Kirk Cousins' free agency market has moved at the speed of a snail. He was stuck in the purgatory of being too good for bad teams and not good enough for a team trying to compete, but at last, Cousins has finally found a new home in 2026.

Adam Schefter reported that the 38-year-old is signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, which is the perfect opportunity for him if you think about it. Yes, the Raiders are three weeks away from drafting Fernando Mendoza with the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, but Cousins is the ideal mentor for him.

Not only has Mendoza received comparisons to Cousins, they could opt to let the Heisman Trophy winner hit the bench for a couple of weeks until he's ready to start. Klint Kubiak has said he doesn't mind sitting Mendoza to begin his career, so Kirk may get a shot to prove he's still got it as a starter.

Kirk Cousins signing with the Las Vegas Raiders will do wonders for extending his career

The timing that they signed the four-time Pro Bowler the day after Mendoza's Pro Day is hilarious, but is just a coincidence. The Raiders have still sought to sign a veteran signal-caller, and if you look at the options available, I would take Cousins over Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or Tyrod Taylor too.

While Michael Penix Jr. was injured, Cousins took over as the Falcons' starter-- and was impressive down the stretch. Not only did the Dirty Birds win their final four games of the season, he proved that he still has some good football in the tank, especially while displaying his rapport with Kyle Pitts.

If you saw how Cousins targeted Pitts in Atlanta, he'll pepper Brock Bowers with targets in the games he starts. Bowers is arguably the best TE in the NFL, so between him, Ashton Jeanty, and an improving WR room with Jalen Nailor, Tre Tucker, and Jack Bech, Captain Kirk is in a good situation.

The offensive line is a work in progress, but beggars can't be choosers. All the Michigan State Spartan wanted was a chance to compete for a starting job (or be a high-level backup), after the Falcons moved on from him, and not only could he get his chance, he'll do so in a good situation while opening the door for an exciting young QB.

The only caveat is that Cousins' time as QB1 will be on a clock from the second Mendoza's name is officially announced, but that's better than backing up someone like Matthew Stafford all year and never seeing the field before being forced into another backup role next offseason before retiring.

At this stage of his career, Cousins isn't much more than a good backup and solid spot starter, so for all the places he could've landed, he took a chance on the perfect team for his post-Falcons chapter.
