The Atlanta Falcons have been without Jessie Bates III for the last week of training camp due to a back injury, which Kevin Stefanski labeled as minor. And his absence has seen some difficult conversations spark even though it's clear that he isn't holding in for a new contract extension.
With him entering a contract year, Bates was floated in trade talks earlier this summer--and now they are resurfacing. While proposing five big camp trade proposals, ESPN's Seth Walder dropped a hypothetical deal this week that would send the three-time All Pro safety to the San Francisco 49ers.
This was the package that Walder had going to Atlanta in exchange for Bates:
"If the Falcons were expected to contend, it would make sense to keep Bates and see the original contract through," Walder wrote. "But they aren't, and with a ton of 2027 cap space even after the Bijan Robinson extension, the Falcons will likely be spenders next offseason. They would risk losing Bates without getting a compensatory pick in return if he walks in free agency. So it's better for Atlanta to deal him now. And while that would mean finding a replacement for Bates, the Falcons wouldn't be lacking in safety talent thanks to emerging second-year player Xavier Watts."
Even further, Walder also noted that Bates' familiarity with ex-Falcons head coach and 49ers DC Raheem Morris makes San Francisco a natural landing spot. While it’s a solid sounding deal on paper, it’s also absolutely the wrong move for the Falcons to make there's a much easier path forward here.
The Atlanta Falcons have no reason to trade away Jessie Bates III
Atlanta just locked up Bijan Robinson on a three-year extension, and hours later found out Jalon Walker tore his ACL and is done for the season. Moving the anchor of the secondary in the same window as losing a starting edge rusher would gut a defense that's already thin up front with James Pearce Jr. facing a possible suspension.
Rather than trading Bates for a 2027 third-round pick, the Falcons could explore a contract extension.Â
A short-term, front-loaded extension could potentially lower his 2026 cap hit while keeping one of the franchise's cornerstone defenders in Atlanta beyond this season. Any additional financial flexibility could then be used to address the team's suddenly depleted edge rusher room.
The 49ers would undoubtedly benefit from adding Bates, particularly with Raheem Morris already familiar with his game and San Francisco looking to strengthen its secondary. But just because a trade makes sense for the 49ers doesn't mean it makes sense for the Dirty Birds.
Atlanta has already lost enough on defense this week. Giving away the unit's unquestioned leader for future draft capital would send the wrong message to a locker room that's still trying to prove it can contend in an open NFC South.
Unless the Atlanta Falcons completely fall out of the playoff picture later this season, Jessie Bates III remains far more valuable wearing Atlanta red and black than bringing back a mid-round draft pick.
