The Atlanta Falcons have spent much of the offseason talking about their quarterback competition. But former Falcons wide receiver Harry Douglas may have summed up the entire situation with one brutally simple statement.
“The quarterback position in Atlanta, you just have to not mess things up,” Douglas said, via Anthony Ramirez.
Cause the Falcons aren't entering 2026 without talent around the quarterback. They have Bijan Robinson, Drake London and a defense that the organization believes can take a significant step forward under new head coach Kevin Stefanski.
That puts even more pressure on the quarterback position.
Atlanta doesn't necessarily need its quarterback to carry the entire team every Sunday. It does, however, need the quarterback to avoid becoming the reason the team fails.
And right now, that is still a major question mark.
Stefanski has been clear that the position would be a competition. The problem is that the competition hasn't been completely normal because Penix has spent much of the offseason working his way back from the ACL injury that ended his 2025 season.
That remains important because Alex Van Pelt, Atlanta's quarterbacks coach, previously said there wasn't really a competition until the two quarterbacks could be evaluated equally.
Penix was still being held out of full team drills when training camp opened, while Tagovailoa was also dealing with a temporary injury issue of his own.
That has made it difficult for Atlanta to get a completely clean evaluation of its two biggest options.
But the situation is finally starting to take shape as recent training camp reports have shown both quarterbacks getting opportunities.
The Falcons can't afford to get this wrong
If the Atlanta Falcons had a roster full of holes, the quarterback situation would simply be another problem to solve. But the Falcons have enough talent that the quarterback position could become disproportionately important.
Bijan Robinson gives Atlanta one of the league's most dangerous offensive weapons. Drake London gives the quarterback a legitimate No. 1 target. The Falcons have also spent significant resources trying to improve the offensive infrastructure around whoever wins the job.
The quarterback just has to consistently put the team in position to win.
The problem is that Atlanta needs to determine which quarterback gives it the best chance to win without allowing the uncertainty itself to become a problem.
There can't be a situation where Atlanta spends half the season wondering whether it made the wrong choice. That is the real wake-up call behind Douglas' comment.
