At this point, it's the NFL's worst-kept secret that Tua Tagovailoa will be the Atlanta Falcons' Week 1 starting quarterback. Because of Michael Penix Jr.'s delayed recovery, this QB battle doesn't feel like much of a competition anymore, but Tagovailoa's own practice performance is ending any doubt.
Tua got off to shaky start due to a lingering back issue, but he's fully healthy now--and he's starting to turn a corner in practice because of it. In a Saturday night practice report from ESPN's Marc Raimondi, he reported that Tua Tagovailoa had his best day of the summer during the "Saturday Night Lights" session at Lanier High School in Sugar Hill.
"Tua Tagovailoa had his best practice of camp thus far, going 6-of-8 in 11s," Raimondi reported. "Tagovailoa’s best throws of camp came Saturday night, a 30-yard layered ball to WR Olamide Zaccheaus and a play-action rollout pass to WR Drake London that went for chunk yardage."
As Raimondi reported, the 28-year-old went 6-of-8 in 11-on-11s, but that's not all. He threw red-zone touchdowns to Jahan Dotson and Drake London, and threw one of the best passes of the summer, marking his first major highlight play as a member of the Falcons after coming over in free agency.

On the play in question, Tagovailoa threw a beautiful ball to Olamide Zaccheus on a deep crosser that went for about 30 air yards--and Zaccheus went for more after the catch. And considering he's coming off the worst season of his career, it's good to know he can still layer the ball like he used to.

But for anyone doubting the way Atlanta's quarterback battle was headed, those concerns were put to bed. Not only did Tua look healthier than he has all summer to date, his first-team reps in 11-on-11s resulted in multiple chunk gains--and he's reportedly been lights-out in the red zone to date.
Penix not being cleared for full contact all but confirmed the inevitable, but Tagovailoa isn't putting anything up to chance. With strong performances and elite throws like this, the gap between the two is only getting larger, especially considering we don't know when he'll actually be cleared for 11s.
Tua Tagovailoa's status as the Dirty Birds' starting quarterback was never in much doubt considering the circumstances, but the healthier he's getting the better he's looked. And now that he's back to 100%, his hopes of embarking on a bounce-back season in a better situation look stronger than ever.
