The most interesting place an NFL team can be is quarterback purgatory, especially when they're set to embark on a QB battle during training camp. But it's more interesting to see a competition not be much of a competition at all. That's what's happening to the Atlanta Falcons, but they're not alone.
Just like the Falcons, the Minnesota Vikings were set to decide to between a former top-10 pick in J.J. McCarthy and an established veteran looking to turn his career around in Kyler Murray. It's the exact same predicament that both Michael Penix Jr. (McCarthy) and Tua Tagovailoa (Murray) are in.
The result of both competitions seems inevitable given the circumstances to the point that labeling it a "competition" feels like false marketing. And Kevin Stefanski may need to take some notes considering Adam Schefter just reported that the Vikings named Kyler Murray their starting QB.

Tua Tagovailoa is primed to follow in Kyler Murray's footsteps in Atlanta
In a weird way, the Falcons should be reheating the Vikings' nachos in a couple of weeks' time. At this point, we know it's inevitable that Tua Tagovailoa will be the Week 1 starter. He's the healthier of the two, has the more polished track record, and he's a better fi fort a Stefanski system built on accuracy. And he's started to turn a corner in practice.
Michael Penix Jr. is still weeks away from being cleared for full contact as he recovers from a torn ACL, and he won't get enough 11-on-11 reps in time to justifiably start in Pittsburgh on Sept. 13. And while the Dirty Birds are going to say he still has a dog in this fight, we can read between the lines.
Every report coming out of Falcons camp suggests that Tagovailoa is only increasing his lead, and the longer that Penix takes to get cleared, the more inevitable it'll be that he'll start Week 1--which will put his future with the franchise under the spotlight just like the player selected two picks after him.
The only difference between these two battles is that J.J. is fully healthy, he is just woefully inconsistent. Yeah, he's 6-4 across 10 career starts, but he hasn't been particularly good in those starts. At least Penix has displayed some flashes of being a franchise QB when he wasn't injured.
And then you have the Kyler and Tua of it all. Two former first-round, highly-touted prospects who have proven to be quality passers who can lead a team to the playoffs, but things crashed and burned and they're looking to turn things around--and they're both in a much better situation to do so now. The weapons are better, the coaching is better, and everything is in line for them both to thrive.
The similarities between the QB situations in both teams are impossible to ignore. You have two oft-injured, high-upside young quarterbacks who the fanbase is starting to lose hope in, but it's the veteran who will ultimately get the starting nod--and that Kyler Murray got the nod in Minnesota, expect Tua Tagovailoa to soon follow suit as the higher-floor option.
