The Atlanta Falcons got grim news out of training camp earlier this week, with Jalon Walker suffering a season-ending torn ACL. Losing the 2025 first-round pick creates a huge hole on Atlanta's defense. Between Walker's injury and a looming suspension for James Pearce Jr., the pass rush went from a strength to a major concern.
With the regular season quickly approaching, the Falcons need to act fast and add another edge rusher. Fortunately for Atlanta, there is a notable option on the trade block. Giants outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux seems to be the odd man out in a stacked group of pass rushers. He has been connected to potential trades since the NFL Draft, and the opportunity is here.
Thibodeaux has had an up-and-down career to this point, but he would be a valuable addition for a team that might be without its two best edge rushers for the majority of the season. Brian Burns was second in the NFL in sacks in 2025, and New York spent top-five picks on Abdul Carter and Arvell Reese. They have no room for him, so the ball is in Ian Cunningham's court to make a summer splash.
Falcons should consider trading for Kayvon Thibodeaux to replace Jalon Walker
The Giants are more than strong enough at edge rusher, but they could use more draft capital to fill out the rest of the roster. The big question regarding a potential trade for Thibodeaux is what New York would want in return. New York reportedly wanted a second-round pick for the 2022 fifth-overall selection leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft.
A trade never came to fruition, but a deal could certainly still get done before Week 1. It's unclear if the Giants will still demand a second-rounder for the 25-year-old, and they might be willing to make a deal while getting a third or fourth-round pick in return. Given Atlanta's need at the position, giving up a mid-round selection is well worth it.
New York picked up Thibodeaux's fifth-year option, so the Falcons wouldn't have to commit long-term until after the 2026 season. Atlanta also has the cap space needed if it wants to extend the former top-five pick. With over $100 million in cap space, the Falcons currently have the second-most cap space in the NFL for 2027, so they can easily take on a potential extension.
It's also worth noting that both Walker and Pearce are on rookie deals for a while, so Atlanta isn't allocating much of its cap to its pass rush. Edge rusher is a premium position, and having two of them on rookie deals opens up a lot of opportunities.
The Dirty Birds also don't seem likely to spend big money at the most expensive position, quarterback, in the near future. With the uncertainty surrounding its current quarterback room Atlanta drafting a new signal-caller in 2027 is absolutely on the table. Between having two pass rushers on rookie deals and not having a highly paid quarterback, the Falcons have plenty of cap flexibility.
Atlanta isn't the only NFC South team that lost a key edge rusher to injury in training camp, as the Panthers' Nic Scourton also suffered a torn ACL. With how tightly contested the NFC South is, being able to properly mitigate an injury at one of the most important positions could make the difference--and the Falcons can do that by bringing in Kayvon Thibodeaux to replace Jalon Walker.
